Mental health is very important for everyone because it plays a key role in overall health and well-being. Taking steps to improve one’s well-being increases protective factors and decrease factors that have a negative impact on a person’s ability to manage day to day. Moreover, it helps and gives ways to overcome pressure and other issues to a large extent, more effectively. There are several steps that can be taken to positively affect one’s overall mental health, thus overall well-being. It is always advisable to seek support from experts but over the next few weeks, I will be giving you some steps and tips that can give you a head start.

Use these 4 Positive Steps to Well-Being

1. Being kind to yourself.

Be your own best friend. Do things for yourself that you would do for the people you love. Being kind to yourself includes showing yourself some compassion and not judging yourself by impossible standards. Encourage yourself instead of criticizing yourself. Forgive yourself for past mistakes and stop beating yourself up.

2. Connecting with others

Connecting with and helping others does amazing and positive things for the chemistry in the brain. When we connect with others, the neurotransmitter oxytocin is boosted. It can be as simple as speaking to the person 6 feet in front of you in the line at the store. In a few weeks we will have a workshop to help you find new ways of connecting, while social distancing.

3. Accomplishing objectives

The human brain gets a boost when people accomplish their objectives during a day. In fact, achievements motivate a person to stay active and continue achieving. Therefore, it is wise to plan tasks and set daily goals that can be completed. These can be washing dishes, folding clothes, or things that are normally in a daily routine, the important thing to remember is recognizing that even small achievements, are still achievements. Learning new skills enables people to enhance their self-confidence levels and other things.

4. Stepping back

It is a well-known fact that often people get caught up in emotional issues. They don’t analyze their problems clearly and start doing work that is unhelpful. Hence, it is advisable to take a step back and look at the big picture; “take a helicopter view”. Taking a step back allows a person to think clearly and be flexible in their response.
